How to clean and main different types of yoga mats?

Do different types of yoga mats clean in the same way? The answer is negative. We will start with 5 common materials.

1. TPE

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) material is the latest technological improvement to the traditional yoga mats. No latex, non-toxic or any harmful chemicals. They are truly eco-friendly, healthy and recyclable. TPE yoga mat offers higher density, durability and rebound resilience.

Clean the yoga mat once a week or whenever it is necessary; do not use a washing machine or dryer.

Method 1:
Please use a cloth with soapy water to wipe the mat; Then rinse with water and wipe dry with a towel or cloth.

Method 2:
Add two cups of water and four drops of detergent to the sprayer, and then wash the mat;
After washing, wipe the water off from the mat with a towel or dry cloth, and then leave it in the shade and dry completely, avoid direct sun exposure.

Please roll up the yoga mat when in an unused state, please make the front (the side with the logo) facing out and the back facing in, to keep the yoga mat flat after unfolding.

2. PVC

A PVC yoga mat is made of PVC resin powder and anti-tearing fiber open-cell foamed under high temperature. Open-cell technology means the mat retains sweat (good for gripping, but bad for bacteria) and oils, but making it more difficult to clean.

Cleaning method:
1, usually clean with a wet towel to wipe, and then rolled up after air-drying.
2. Partial dirt: Wipe with a small towel moistened with the diluted cleaning solution, then wipe it again with a wrung wet towel, and wait for the air to dry naturally.

Do not touch sharp objects and be sure to avoid exposure.

3. Suede

The suede yoga mat is made with high-end soft and absorbent suede. It will soak moisture and sweat. A luxurious and absorbent suede yoga mat was designed to be the ultimate yoga companion.

To ensure hygiene, we suggest that wash it every other week or according to your needs to choose the proper cleaning period.  Some yogis who love cleanliness are used to washing every time they use it, but it is not necessary. Because too much cleaning will reduce slip properties.

Before use, it is a good choice to practice after spraying the surface with water (because of the feature for suede is: the wetter, the more non-slip. It is suitable for Hot Yoga).

 Cleaning method:

  • Clean with water and wipe the surface of the suede yoga mat with a towel. Then just air dry.
  • If local dirt on the yoga mat, just wipe it with a small towel moistened with the diluted cleaning solution. Then wipe it again with a wet towel that has been wrung out, and air dry naturally.
  • If the suede yoga mat is dirty enough, fill the bathtub with cold water and add washing powder. We suggest less detergent used because any residue will make the yoga mat slippery in the future. Then wipe the mat with a damp cloth and rinse. Finally, absorb excess water with a dry towel and air dry.

  • We do not recommend brushing: it will damage the suede so will affect the slip resistance.
  • Machine washing is also not recommended: because the product is a compound of suede and rubber, machine washing will destroy the composite surface so lead to degumming problems.
  • Be sure to avoid exposure: after exposure, the material is denatured and softened, so the daily normal use will be affected to some extent.

4. Rubber

Rubber's name comes from one of its early uses—like an eraser. Friction is what makes rubber the ideal material for an eraser. It's also the quality that makes it a great non-slip Yoga mat. Plus, rubber is sturdy, flexible, sticky and provides excellent cushioning. The rubber yoga mat is a great choice for eco-conscious yogis, it is fully biodegradable.

Cleaning method:

1. Usually clean with a wet towel to wipe, and then rolled up after air-drying.
2. Partial dirt: Wipe with a small towel moistened with the diluted cleaning solution, then wipe it again with a wrung wet towel, and wait for the air to dry naturally.

Do not touch sharp objects and be sure to avoid exposure.

5. Cork

The cork yoga mat is environmentally friendly and non-toxic. The wood has a more natural feel and is non-slip in dry and wet conditions. However, it tends to accumulate stains and is not easy to clean. So use a damp cloth to wipe and clean it (instead of waiting for a magical cleaning elf to sprout from the cork).

How to deodorize a newly yoga mat?

It is normal for newly bought yoga mats to have plastic smell, and most newly bought yoga mats have a plastic taste. Because the mat is completely sealed from the factory, no matter how expensive the mat is, it will have a little smell of the material. This is normal, non-toxic and can be used with confidence. But what about the plastic taste?

First, open the outer package; then, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with warm water; Then, place it in a cool and ventilated place for one or two days to remove the plastic smell remaining on the mat.

What is a yoga towel?

Yoga mats must be washed after using them for a long time. Friends with a clean habit may even wash them once. However, washing too often will cause the yoga mat to absorb too much water, and the use of time and effect will be greatly reduced. As long as we do daily maintenance of yoga mats, we can also keep ourselves away from germs and keep healthy.

The usual maintenance of yoga mats can be aided by a small tool: yoga towels. The function of yoga towels is to spread sweat on yoga mats. It is made of 100% premium microfiber.  So it is super comfortable, skin-friendly, durable and odorless.  The yoga mat towel has large friction and absorbs sweat more slippery, perfect for hot yoga.
